Chicago Elevated Railway - 100 years apart

7:24 AM

Taken in 1908 at appx. 40th and Michigan Ave the above B & W photo shows the construction of the stockyards EL branch. This branch of the system was used to transport workers and visitors to the Chicago Union Stockyards.

People forget or may not even know that at one time Chicago was the major meat packing and distribution center for the USA. Being referred to as "HOG BUTCHER FOR THE WORLD" by poet Carl Sandburg.

The lower photo was taken; tried to at least; from the same spot 100 years later.
The stockyards branch had long since been demolished. However you will note that the garage still is hanging on at that time and is still with us today
